Hands Across Azusa 2016
The Annual MLK Day Celebration
The City of Azusa invites middle and high school students to submit a
250 word or less essay or poem that captures the life, times and teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. A hard copy of the essay or poem should be submitted by January 4, 2015 at 5:30 p.m. to City Hall or emailed to
Yolanda Peña. The selected essay or poem will be announced at the annual Hands Across Azusa event and will receive a gift card from The Outlet by ELS.
The event will feature the free screening of the theatrical release, Selma featuring David Oyelowo who in 2014 received a Golden Globe Award nomination for best actor in a drama for his portrayal of Martin Luther King, Jr.
Selma is rated PG-13 and focuses on the actions of Martin Luther King Jr. during the civil rights march from Selma to Montgomery to secure equal voting rights.
Hands Across Azusa will also feature the reading of Dr. King’s famous “I Have a Dream Speech” as well as a performance of heartfelt hymns and songs from the civil rights movement performed by the students of Christbridge Academy.
Join the City of Azusa on Sunday, January 17, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. in the Azusa Civic Auditorium, 213 E. Foothill Blvd for an event commemorating the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King.
